Finding reliable academic sources can be one of the most frustrating parts of a university assignment. You might find dozens of articles within minutes, but then comes the difficult question: which ones are actually peer-reviewed, relevant and worth citing?
I’ve found that the easiest way to deal with this is to stop treating research as a hunt for as many references as possible. Instead, think about what evidence your argument needs, where that evidence is likely to be published, and how you can check its quality before using it.
Once you get into that habit, academic research becomes much more manageable.
A peer-reviewed article has been assessed by other researchers with relevant expertise before it is published. The purpose is to scrutinise the quality of the research, its methods, reasoning and conclusions.
That makes peer review an important quality check, but it isn’t a guarantee that every conclusion in a paper is correct.
This distinction matters because scholarly and peer-reviewed don’t always mean exactly the same thing. Academic databases can contain books, conference papers, dissertations, preprints, editorials and other material alongside journal articles.
In fact, Google Scholar itself says that it covers a wide range of scholarly literature, including journal and conference papers, theses, dissertations, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports.
So if your lecturer specifically asks for peer-reviewed journal articles, don’t assume that every Google Scholar result qualifies.
When I need sources for an assignment, the university library is usually the best place to start.
Your institution may subscribe to databases that you won’t be able to access freely through an ordinary web search. More importantly, the library catalogue and subject databases can help you narrow your search to academic material.
Depending on your course, you may have access to databases such as:
The exact list will vary between universities and subjects.
Many library databases also provide a peer-reviewed filter. Applying that filter can remove a large amount of irrelevant material before you even begin reading. University library guidance commonly recommends using these filters where available, while still checking the individual article.
If you’re not sure which database is appropriate for your subject, ask a librarian. A ten-minute conversation can save you a surprisingly large amount of time.
Google Scholar is extremely useful, but I treat it as a research discovery tool rather than a peer-review certificate.
You can search for academic literature across disciplines and then explore related articles, references and papers that have cited your original result. Google Scholar also allows you to search by author, title and publication and to restrict searches by date.
For example, imagine your assignment asks:
How does financial literacy affect investment decisions among university students?
A search for the entire question might produce mixed results.
Instead, break the topic into concepts:
Then combine them:
"financial literacy" AND "investment decisions" AND students
You can experiment with synonyms until you start seeing the terminology researchers actually use.
One of the most useful features of Google Scholar is the Cited by option.
Suppose you find an article from several years ago that seems highly relevant. Open its references to find earlier research. Then look at the papers that have cited it to discover later research.
Google Scholar specifically recommends using references when you need broader background and “Cited by” when you want newer, more specific research.
This gives you a simple research path:
Good article → references → newer citing articles → related research
It is often much faster than repeatedly starting new searches from scratch.
Finding something that looks scholarly isn’t enough. Before you use it, spend a couple of minutes checking what you’re actually looking at.
Find the journal’s website and look for information about its editorial and peer-review process.
Don’t rely purely on the appearance of the PDF. A professional-looking document can still be a report, conference paper or preprint.
Look at the authors’ names and institutional affiliations.
Are they researchers or academics working in the relevant field?
This doesn’t automatically make their conclusions reliable, but it gives you useful context about the source.

Not every legitimate journal article will follow exactly this structure. However, a clear research method and reference list are useful signs that you’re dealing with scholarly research.

If you’re unsure about the source, search the article title separately and compare the details across the publisher’s website, your library database and other academic records.
Preprints have become increasingly common, particularly in rapidly developing research areas.
A preprint is generally a version of research made available before formal journal publication and peer review. That means a paper can appear in an academic search engine without having completed the traditional peer-review process.
This is another reason not to judge a source simply because it appears in Google Scholar.
Some repositories may also contain postprints or accepted manuscripts that correspond to research which has subsequently been peer-reviewed. You need to establish which version you’re reading.
If your lecturer specifically requires peer-reviewed articles, the safest approach is to locate the published journal version and verify its publication details.
Even after you’ve established that an article is peer-reviewed, you still have work to do.
I would always ask: Does this research actually support the point I’m trying to make?
Imagine your assignment claims that financial literacy improves investment performance.
You find a peer-reviewed article about financial literacy. Great — but read it carefully.
Perhaps the study examined financial knowledge rather than financial literacy. Maybe it measured investment intentions rather than actual investment returns. Perhaps the researchers found only a weak relationship.
Those differences matter.
Read beyond the abstract and look at:
A source becomes useful when you understand what it demonstrates, not simply because its title contains your keywords.
Long, conversational searches are often less effective than searches built around research concepts.
Let’s take a different example.
Suppose you’re writing about the relationship between sustainability reporting and company performance.
Instead of:
Does sustainability reporting improve the financial performance of companies?
Try:
"sustainability reporting" AND "financial performance"
Then experiment with related terminology:
"ESG reporting" AND "firm performance"
or:
"environmental social governance" AND profitability
Researchers don’t always use the same terminology as the assignment question. Finding those alternative terms can dramatically improve your results.
This is particularly useful when you’re researching an accounting assignment, because academic literature may use terms such as ESG, corporate reporting, non-financial disclosure, corporate social responsibility and sustainability disclosure for related areas.
You don’t need to find twenty perfect papers on your first search.
Try finding one excellent article first.
I call this a seed article because it gives you somewhere to grow your research.
Once you’ve found it, examine its:
References: These can lead you to foundational theories and earlier studies.
Cited-by results: These can reveal newer research that has responded to or developed the original work.
Authors: Researchers who repeatedly publish on the same subject may lead you to additional relevant studies.
Keywords: The terminology used in the article can improve your next database search.
Methodology: It may introduce research methods or measurements that are useful for your own discussion.
This approach turns one good source into a map of the wider literature.
Students sometimes assume that a 2025 or 2026 article must be better than one published in 2015.
That’s not necessarily true.
A newer paper may provide current evidence, but an older study could contain the theory or foundational research that your argument depends upon.
Instead of asking only, “How recent is this?”, ask:
For fast-changing subjects, recent research may be particularly important. For established theories, older sources can remain highly valuable.
A strong assignment usually isn’t built from ten articles that all repeat the same conclusion.
Look for differences.
Imagine you find five studies examining the relationship between ESG reporting and financial performance. One finds a positive relationship, another finds no significant relationship, and another finds that the relationship varies by industry.
That disagreement is interesting.
You can investigate why the findings differ.
Perhaps the studies:
Now your sources aren’t just supporting individual sentences. They’re helping you analyse the subject critically.
That is much closer to what university-level academic writing is supposed to do.
One habit can make a noticeable difference to the quality of an assignment: match each citation to the precise claim it supports.
Don’t place one citation at the end of a paragraph containing five different claims unless the source genuinely supports all five.
For example:
Financial literacy is associated with investment behaviour among young adults.
Your source should actually provide evidence for that relationship.
If the source only discusses financial knowledge, you shouldn’t stretch it to support a broader statement about financial literacy and investment behaviour.
This is where reading the full article matters.
If you’re working on an accounting assignment, the same principle applies: research first, evaluate carefully, and only then decide which evidence belongs in your final paper. Not every source in an assignment needs to be peer-reviewed.
Depending on your subject, reputable government websites, professional bodies, company reports, official statistics and high-quality news sources can provide useful background or current data.
The important thing is to understand what role each source plays.
A government dataset might provide statistics.
A professional accounting body might explain a regulatory development.
A peer-reviewed study might provide empirical evidence.
A news report might provide information about a recent event.
These sources aren’t interchangeable, and your lecturer’s requirements should always take priority.
AI tools can be useful during the early stages of research. For example, you can use them to brainstorm search terms, identify concepts you don’t understand or generate questions to investigate.
The dangerous part is treating an AI-generated reference as if it has already been verified.
Before citing any paper, find the actual publication.
Check:
If you can’t find the article through a credible academic source, don’t put it into your bibliography simply because an AI tool gave you a convincing-looking citation.

That takes a little longer than copying the first promising Google result, but it can save you from having to replace weak sources later.
Finding peer-reviewed sources becomes much easier once you stop thinking of academic research as simply finding articles.
Start with your university library and relevant databases. Use Google Scholar to discover terminology, authors and related research. Verify that individual articles have actually gone through the required review process, and then evaluate the quality and relevance of the research itself.
Most importantly, don’t build your assignment around citations you haven’t read.
One strong source can lead you to another, and one useful research question can open up an entire body of literature. The goal isn’t to produce the longest reference list possible. It’s to find credible evidence, understand what that evidence actually says, and use it to construct an argument that you can defend.
